As a member of the prominent Inman family and wife of Mayor Ivan Allen Jr., Louise\n\n\t\t\t\t\tRichardson Allen used her influence to support numerous educational and cultural\norganizations across Atlanta. An avid gardener and lover of history, Allen helped to found the Georgia\nTrust for Historic Preservation, the Cherokee Garden Library, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden.\nShe later facilitated the creation of a history museum, the Atlanta History Center, in her home\nneighborhood of Buckhead.\n

\n\t\t\t\t\tAllen turned her efforts towards Oakland Cemetery in the early 1970s. The neglected cemetery presented a landscape of collapsed monuments, weed-choked lots, and broken brick paths. In 1976, Allen\nand several other “friends of Oakland” founded the Historic Oakland Foundation to preserve, restore,\nenhance, and share the cemetery with the people of Atlanta. Allen rests on Oakland’s East Hill near her\nson and husband, two other Oakland Cemetery supporters. The Historic Oakland Foundation continues to support the cemetery’s preservation and provides its visitors with new educational experiences.
